Student Involvement & Leadership
At the core of Pacific Lutheran University’s mission is service, leadership, and care. What better way to recognize these stellar qualities in Lutes than with a celebration of student leadership? PLU’s Student Involvement & Leadership is hosting “Celebration of Leadership 2015” May 11 to recognize the work done by student-leaders on in the PLU community and the greater Parkland/Tacoma area.
Student Involvement & Leadership encourages students, faculty, and staff to join them at 6 p.m. May 11 in Chris Knutzen Hall to participate in awarding these Lutes. The event will recognize several individuals who have been selected by students, faculty, and staff to receive these various leadership awards. First-year students, continuing students, and graduating seniors will each receive specific distinction during “Celebration of Leadership”. Additionally, eight club awards will honor individuals, on-campus clubs, and events.
First-year students are honored for their service, leadership and care through the Emerging Leaders Program. The Leaders of Distinction award recognizes students who are continuing their undergraduate education and have enriched PLU’s campus and the local community. Graduating/graduate students can either receive the Ubuntu Award or induction in to the Pinnacle Society. The Ubuntu Award honors graduates who have exhibited leadership on campus and in the community, and the Pinnacle Society celebrates graduates who have demonstrated leadership and service in their co-curricular life at PLU.
The several club and individual awards are as follows:
- Student Organization of the Year
- Program of the Year
- Social Program
- Educational Program
- Social Justice Program
- Community Service Program
- Individual Awards
- Outstanding Officer of the Year
- Outstanding Adviser of the Year
- Quiet Influence Award
Finally, the incoming members of the Mortar Board Honor Society will be celebrated. The Mortar Board is national honor society that recognizes students for excellent leadership, scholarship and service.
“Celebration of Leadership 2015” serves as an opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary leadership on PLU’s campus and within PLU’s students.
“It allows everyone the opportunity to both recognize and be recognized for the work being done on this campus,” said Adam Steelquist, Program Coordinator for Student Involvement & Leadership. “PLU’s mission statement uplifts the importance of living “…[a life] of thoughtful inquiry, leadership, service, and care…,” all of which are on display at this event.”
