Movin 92.5 Brooke & Jubal in the Morning’s own Jubal Flagg discusses the magic behind his famous segments, Jubal’s Phone Taps and Brooke and Jubal’s Second Date Update.
Jubal currently hosts “Brooke and Jubal in the Morning” on MOViN 92.5 in Seattle and can be seen throughout the country as a regular on FOX TV’s Dish Nation. Jubal is a stand up comedian, writer, television personality and radio host.
Jubal’s Phone Taps
Prank phone calling has persisted around for ages. Hearing the reactions of a prank phone call can make someone crack up and bond. Jubal decided to take it up a notch: air it on the radio.
Before working on Movin 92.5 and Dish Nation, Jubal worked for Kiss 106.1 where he decided to make prank phone calls and air reactions on the radio. The segment started out twice a week. When popularity of the Phone Taps spread like wildfire, the Phone Taps turned into a daily thing.
However, listeners don’t know the time and effort producers put into a “Phone Tap.”
“It’s a lot of work that gets put into one phone call,” Jubal said.
Not everything gets aired. The actual phone call takes about 45 minutes to make. The phone call then gets edited into the best 6 minutes for everyone’s listening pleasure.
It takes about 3 hours to produce a phone tap.
However, the person on the other end usually wants the reaction aired on the radio. The reactions can range from a variety of emotions that will always lead to laughter. It might sound fun, but beware of the aftermath.
“Some people actually lose friendships,” Jubal said.
Brooke and Jubal’s Second Date Update
Imagine someone going perfect first date. Feeling confident, grabbing the phone and trying to schedule a second date sounds great; except for the fact that they are ignoring all phone calls and texts. Why? Instead of wondering, Brooke and Jubal call to figure out what went wrong. The Second Date Updates have been formed.
Playing three Second Date Updates a week, listeners love to hear the wild reasons why someone doesn’t want to go on a second date. Bringing their dog to the date, constantly talking about UFO’s or they couldn’t get back to them because they are in prison. Jubal has heard it all.
Like the Phone Taps, The Second Date Update takes a lot of time.
Most of them lead to snoozeville.
“We get a lot of boring ones,” Jubal said. “We only want to air the ones that make you laugh.”
Secret to the Segments
The ratings of Movin 92.5’s segments skyrocketed. Then again, it takes the right person to generate a successful segment. The right person can take the segment to the next level. This is where Jubal comes in.
Steve Boyd, Producer of Brooke and Jubal in the Morning, works with Jubal on the daily.
“He’s a very hard worker,” Boyd said.
Famously known in the Seattle area, not a lot of people know that Jubal is an introvert.
“For the most part, I am an introverted, quiet person. Others are usually shocked to meet me in person,” Jubal said, “I’m more of an observer, that’s how I’m able to make jokes because I’m reserved and watch people’s interactions.”
Keeping to himself, Jubal has one goal in mind: To grab your attention.
Listeners are usually multitasking while listening to the show. It takes a certain type of crazy to make them think what did he just say?
“I want people who don’t know me to be interested in what I’m saying, if I can do that, I did a good job” Jubal said.
Jubal plans on always doing radio. He hopes to venture out, but always have a relationship with radio.
