PACIFIC LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY LEGACY STUDENT MEDIA MERGES

The Mooring Mast and Mast Student Television have joined forces to offer more content and opportunities to the Pacific Lutheran University community through a collaboration of efforts called Mast Media.

The organizations, Pacific Lutheran University’s award-winning weekly student newspaper and television station, have previously worked separately to provide the campus and PLU community with news, entertainment and social media content. The Mooring Mast has been an active presence on campus since 1924. Mast Student Television, previously known as KCNS 26, has been a campus fixture since 1972.

Changes to the structure of professional newsrooms influenced the student media change.

“There is an emphasis in the real world on video and online content. We wanted student media to reflect that,” Makenzie Landis, the 2011-2012 KCNS 26 General Manager, said.

Reporters now write, film, and edit their content into news packages, which are accessible online at http://www.plu.edu/mast. The Mooring Mast publishes a weekly Friday edition of the paper, as well as updates its social media presence throughout the week with online exclusive content. Mast TV live broadcasts its news program, News at Nine, Thursdays on channel 26, and regularly posts videos on YouTube, Facebook and Vimeo, including the popular 4-part webseries, Outnumbered. Mast Media will produce 22 issues of The Mooring Mast and 22 episodes of News at Nine during the 2013-2014 academic year.

“Merging the two organizations has increased our content and viewership,” 2012-2014 Mast Student Television General Manager Storm Gerlock said.

The combined organizations provide a learning lab environment for students to explore and gain a range of communication skills that are transferable to a variety of careers. Positions are available for the 2013-2014 school year as editors, reporters, photographers, videographers and columnists on the PLU employment website, Career Connections.
