The softball team is certainly hoping history repeats itself.
For the second consecutive year the softball team travels to Linfield College to compete in the Northwest Conference tournament as the two seed. As the two-seed last year, the Lutes beat Linfield (regular-season champion) twice in the championship round to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament before their run to the NCAA title.
The Lutes finished in second place this year behind Linfield with a record of 25-15, 18-10 in the NWC after being ranked No. 1 in the national preseason poll.
A tournament title would lock up a NCAA tournament bid for the Lutes. If the Lutes fall short in the tournament, their playoff destiny will be left in the hands of the West region selection committee which will have to decide if they are deserving of an at-large bid.
Pacific Lutheran opens with third-place Whitworth on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The Lutes won three of four meetings with the Pirates this season.
